After 3 years of losses, Royal Bank of Canada has abandoned it's operation in the US that it established some 8 or 9 years ago after buying Centura Bank. It will be interesting what the impact on Raleigh will be as PNC take control after paying $3.45Bn for the RBC operations. According to Yahoo Finance RBC will write off $1.63Bn when the deal closes which is a substantial loss by any standard but reflects the asset values in the post crash economy. Let's hope it's a good deal for PNC and that they invest in the business so we have a good alternative to Bank of America and Wells Fargo.

In buying RBC, PNC will gain the massive RBC tower in downtown Raleigh as well as naming rights to RBC Center, which hosts Carolina Hurricanes hockey games, North Carolina State University basketball games and other entertainment and sporting events.“Those are impressive properties,” Rohr said, adding that PNC is committed to both.

Although Rohr said “some jobs will go away,” he said he has "no idea” as to the extent of any job cuts. RBC Bank employs about 500 people in Raleigh, another 1,000 at the Rocky Mount center and 2,600 people statewide, according to Chief Executive Jim Westlake

Whoa! The return of Beermat!

Yeah I was thinking how odd it would be to call the RBC Plaza condo building the "PNC Plaza".

PNC Bank bought the Garden State Arts Center (Outdoor Amphitheater) years ago, but all my NJ friends and I still call it the Garden State Arts Center!

This was the best situation for RBC employees. If BB&T took over, then there would be a larger workforce reduction due to the overlapping market. Hopefully they stay committed to Raleigh. They now own (name lease) some pretty pieces of property.

It will be somewhat odd to watch the Canes play at a PNC named building, especially when the Pens are in town.
We have an account with RBC, maybe we'll hang around and see how the new owners do.
Perhaps I've been reading this forum too long ... I was expecting a snarky comment at the end.

Thx

Frank

The loss of RBC will greatly benefit Centura.

I loved banking there for 17 years until the Canadians took Centura over. That drove me to SECU for a good financial institution.

Planters & Peoples were combined to form Centura but things stayed local. RBC destroyed a great bank. Good Riddance RBC.
