Capital City Grocery in Downtown Raleigh Reopens!
Not sure how I missed this, but it looks like the Capital City Grocery in Downtown Raleigh is open once again! I hope to stop in soon to check out how they changed it around.
Capital City Grocery - Seaboard Station, Downtown Raleigh NC
From the N&O:
Grocery tries again
Sue Stock, Staff Writer
July 14, 2007
Let's call this take two for the Capital City Grocery store in Raleigh's Seaboard Station.
The market opened with great fanfare in October and was the fulfillment of downtown residents' longtime wish for a grocery store. Still, despite the initial excitement, the store closed in April after customers stopped coming, complaining about poor selection and an understocked store.
Now under new ownership and newly renovated, Capital City Grocery reopens to the public today.
The store has a new look and has obtained a license to sell beer and wine by the glass for patrons who wish to use the in-store or patio seating.
And there will be more prepared foods that customers in a hurry can pick up, a sushi chef and an expanded deli. The organic and natural food sections have expanded, including twice the amount of space for produce.
Despite the fact that Capital City will face stiff competition from Wal-Mart and warehouse clubs such as Costco and Sam's, independent groceries can be successful. In 2006, there were 8,211 independent stores, which made up 24.1 percent of all grocery stores, according to the Food Marketing Institute.
Seaboard Station is a development in a former warehouse area near Peace College. Along with the grocery, popular local restaurant Tookie's Grill will open its newest outlet there in about a week.

I'm looking forward to checking out Seaboard Station. I work just a mile or two from there.
BTW, the food at Seaboard Cafe is really good, too. We've had their catered food at a client event.

I have to revive this thread as I have just started shopping there again (after the first iteration closed and it fell off my radar) and I am pleasantly surprised. Does it have everything I EVER need in a grocery store...no...but it has most things.
But it does have a couple things which will have me going there regularly.
First, the coffee guy there makes a GREAT cuban coffee or cubano, as some call it. I love love love cuban coffee and don't know anywhere else in the city that makes it. I now find that if I need to pick up a few things, I go there and get a cubano, and skip HT.
Also, they have Neomonde hummus, baba ghonoush, etc. in the deli. I know you can get them from Neomonde, but it is great to not to have to make a special trip. It has become a staple in our fridge now.
Also, the deli makes a mean ham salad....great for party snacks.
If you live near there, and like bluegrass, Fillmore Valley Boys are there tommorrow (Friday) night. They are pretty great......maybe I will need to pick up a few things tomorrow???????

No need to go to another website for that info http://www.city-data.com/forum/ralei...ses-again.html
When I saw this post I thought it reopened again -- two days after it closed. I was confused until I saw the date of the post
