My work is transfering me to Raleigh from New Jersey and I'm looking for a cowboy/horse friendly area nearby. I'm interested in locations that are within an hours drive or Raleigh that I can have several horses on a medium size farm. I ride english and western but lean more towards western. I'm looking for somewhere a little bit coutry. Thanks

Land alone isn't a problem if you want to build. There are hundreds of 4 to 20 acres lots, under $200000 within 45 miles straight-line of DT Raleigh.
If you want a home with it, that makes it more interesting.

If you really are going to keep several horses, you should probably think closer to 12-20 acres to alternate paddock and have some grass rather than mud. 4 acres seems unfair to the horses.

I would suggest looking in the North East to East Wake area, the Creedmoor area, out US 64 into Chatham County, or down US 1 around New Hill or into Harnett County.

For "several" horses (3?), I agree - you need more than 4 acres - the old rule was an acre per horse, but this is really pushing it in terms of having pasture grass for them to eat, you would have to buy hay to feed. Would suggest a minimum of 7 - 8 acres for 3 - more for more horses.

I don't think you can have so much that the horses would ever be offended by surplus pasture...
