This is not surprising. NC gets rural and inexpensive very fast in just about any direction. Not sure what you do for a living, but the catch is most people don't want a 35-minute commute to Raleigh or more than that if going to the RTP.

If it's not the Triangle, Triad or Charlotte...chances are, it's probably on the rural side.
Agree with everyone's statements, that it get's rural fast. Best thing is that it really doesn't get dumpy or redneck when venturing outside of urban development since the area is very clean, as long as you avoid some out-skirting towns.
Any property around the perimeter of Raleigh/Durham will be a sound investment. That is why I still own rental property in the area,while living in SoCal.
