I'm looking to re-locate to the Raleigh/Durham area in the next nine months. I want to rent the first year. Where are family-friendly and affordable places to live? Is it best to work with a realtor? If so, whom? What are some website that feature housing that isn't craigslist? Thanks.
What do you consider affordable? Any particular amenities or community features you'd be looking for. I would describe this entire area as family friendly So cost, job location, and your individual tastes are going to help determine where you might want to look.
I want to be in a central location (near restaurants, parks, etc). I'd like to find a home rental for under $1,100 too. A friend of mine grew up in North Hills but I hear prices there are outrageous.

Try realtor.com and use the "Advanced Search" feature to specify rentals. There are lots of nice suburban-type homes under $1100 in Raleigh. Many of these are homes that Realtors would be selling under a better real-estate market, and they are now for rent. I'm not sure what you mean by "centrally-located", as the area is really spread out, and car dependent. Cary usually gets high marks for having interesting amenties, and there's "Five Points" which is supposed to be a walkable area. I'd also check some of the older areas of Durham.
