I'm looking for ideas on what suburbs of Raleigh that have historic downtown areas with restaurants & shopping as well as historic, but updated homes. all this and good schools too??
Raleigh has great historic neighborhoods downtown (much of the rest of Raleigh is suburban). Same with Durham. Both have revitalized downtowns as well as modern updated homes. Apex also comes to mind.
If you're looking for a true "small town" with historic homes and a nice downtown, Hillsborough should be at the top of your list.
The suburban downtowns in the area that I would say are really worth visiting are Apex, Carrboro, and Hillsborough (in that order.)
Others Fuquay-Varina: Pretty nice, except one half of their downtown is a mile away from the other half. Zebulon: I've only gone to Whitley Galleries, but the rest of the town looked nice enough. Cary: There's some stuff there but I'm not too impressed. Creedmoor, Pittsboro: Drove through them, looked nice enough Holly Springs, Garner, Knightdale: Skip 'em. There's nothing there. Clayton, Mebane, Wake Forest, Wendell, Zebulon, Franklinton, Youngsville: Never been, so I can't say.
Apex downtown has really blown up since I lived down there (wasn't bad then, but lots of new stuff since). And Apex is a decent commute into either RTP or downtown Raleigh.
Apex has a cute Main Street.
Apex schools are good - most of it is newly developed (houses and shopping)
half old and half new. Has new shopping at Beaver Creek
I personally think Apex has one of the top downtowns of the Raleigh suburbs. Beats out Cary, at least
