I'm headed to Portland, OR for a week later this summer and researching flights from RDU Airport. I can't seem to find any direct flights ... do they exists? If any of you Triangle folks moved here from Portland and have tips on things to do and sights to see out there please feel free to send me a DM. Thanks!

I'm going to suggest that you post your question about what to see and do in the Portland forum, as those folks will know the area best .....

The airline industry refers to "direct" flights as those where you don't change planes, so you may make a stop. I assume you are looking for non-stop flights. I don't think there are any non-stops to the NW, but you can look on Kayak and the airlines they don't cover like Southwest.

The RDU website (http://www.rdu.com/airlineflightinfo/destinations.htm - broken link) doesn't show any destinations in the Pacific Northwest, so it looks like you'll have to change planes somewhere.

When I travel to Eugene OR from RDU it takes me a minimum of 9 hours. The stop before Eugene is always Portland. Good luck on the long flight.

Either Atlanta, and I think Charlotte.

The only west coast flight you will find is to LAX on Delta. And it comes and goes (meaning, they discontinue it, they start it back, then discontinue, etc). Other than that, RDU doesn't have any flights to the west. Back in the Midway Airlines days, I think we had a flight to San Jose for a short time. There was talk about a Midway Seattle flight, and then I think Midway Airlines went out of business. In general, I just don't think there's enough business to justify these west coast flights. We fly American a lot, and go through Chicago or Dallas to the west.

If one asks about "west" but not "west coast", Southwest still flies nonstop to Phoenix and Las Vegas.

Delta formerly flew nonstop to Salt Lake City. For a while Midway also flew nonstop to LAX, and I believe US Airways did Phoenix as well.

There was the occasional rumor about a SFO nonstop on United, but it never happened.

Try Kayak.com to look for flight options. I fly to the Pacific NW frequently and the best I can do is RDU to Atlanta to PDX.

I travel every week and unfortunately the answer is no. You will have to connect from RDU.
