Duke Energy sent me a bill last week saying that I had a broken meter that has been replaced. I look outside and indeed there is a new looking meter installed. Well they say that the meter was faulty and that it was "off" by $231. They even offer to give me more time to satisfy this.
I wonder how they came up with $231. Anyone know. I haven't called yet but I will. My belief is that if they are guestimating it then they need to not be trying to collect it.
I have Progress but they did the same thing, they charged me for what I used last year during the same time period. Totally bogus, but nothing you can do, but not pay it, but that will impact your credit score and get your lights turned off.

Many utilities keep removed meters in a "quarantine area" for a period of time. This allows them to retrieve the meters if there are billing questions. You may also want to call the PUC to discuss - NCUC - Contact Information
Thanks. I will look into it and be giving them a call today. I hate utility companies because it's really a monopoly over areas. It isn't like I can switch to another one or go from Duke to Progress or back and forth. It is very evident when I speak to them on the phone as well. They know they will always win b/c they will shut off your electricity. My neighbors can only bear a generater for so long I am sure.
I'm with Progress which Duke will merge with soon if approved,
if I'm not mistaken,PE charges more for kilowatts during the summer
than the rest of the year. My bill for August is $380.00
