I'm also thinking of relocating soon to the triangle area. I'm getting ready to take my boards pretty soon so I'll be on the same boat as your sister. The only diff is that I've been working as an lpn for 6 years...I'm hoping I will find employment soon after I get my license. I read that johnson medical is flying her in for an interview. They pay the travel costs?? That's great. Has she heard of any sign up bonuses?? Any info u can share with me in terms of her finding work andwhat area u choose will be very helpful in terms of me making a decision. Wish u both the best of luck with ur relocation!

It's Cape Fear Valley Hospital in Fayetteville, which is an hour south of Raleigh. They are flying her down and back within the same day and I know the flight cost around $400. The recruiter said its because the position is for the ER and I think its new. No mention of signing bonus, but they didn't talk about salary yet other than she'd make the at least the same as she does now. The interview is not until next week. Not sure if being an lpn will help or not... Thanks and good luck to you as well.

Thanks BeachBound, but I truly want to be beach bound myself! Got a call from greenville area today, so maybe we'll go that way instead, which is closer to the beach than Raleigh!

Greenville has an excellent hospital and the ECU Medical School. There are also a lot of specialists in Greenville. People in the east with really serious conditions get sent to Pitt Memorial b/c it is the best hospital in the eastern part of the state. So, that could be a good market for your sister to find a nursing job. Sounds like you already have an employer interested in you, and it is a promising area for your sister.

After my research it seems like a good area and has what we are looking for. Plus my cousins will only be about 90 minutes away and visiting Raleigh/Durham would still be possible. I liked the Winterville area because we don't want to live right in downtown. I like having a college close because eventually I want to be a principal so I'll have to go back to school yet again. My sister is the one with the job prospect, so well see what happens with that and the other one. Guess wherever we are meant to be will be where we'll be! I can sub anywhere and hopefully eventually get a teaching job. It seems to be too late now and my only interviews were with Wake and I'm not a minority

So if anyone has more information about the Greenville/Winterville area I'd be all ears. I looked in the forum for Coastal NC and there isn't much information as for Raleigh.

Thanks again for all of your help and I'm glad the hospital saved your life Francois or this forum would be lacking lots of information and advice.

Hello all,

I have been wanting to move South to NC all my life because I hate the PA weather (24 inch snowstorm last winter and I like the hot, steamy weather) and I love sweet tea and barbeque. I didn't get to chose where I live, my parents did, so I definitely want to relocate and will have a job first don't worry. My sister just turned 25 and I just turned 30 (need a fresh start) and we have family in Cary, but during a visit (we went basically everywhere in the Triangle area) we fell in love with Apex, specifically around Beaver Creek Commons. We are sick of driving 45+ minutes for our commute or shopping. I recently made a career change to teaching (unfortunately I changed prior to all the budget cuts and no where in my area is even posting positions), but I can sub anywhere (which is what I'm doing in PA while I finish grad school) and waitress if need be. My sister is a RN and has worked as a nursing assistant for 6 years, but as a RN only for 8 months. A lot of the bigger hospitals (UNC, Rex, WakeMed) won't consider her until she has over a year experience, but we're tired of waiting and have learned our out of town address is stopping a lot from calling us. I've had an interview and phone interview, but both were with Wake and unfortunately I'm not a minority, which they are pushing to hire right now. I don't feel comfortable changing our address to our cousins because I would feel like I'm lying to future employers and I'm sure that wouldn't be a good start.

So Cape Fear Valley Hospital in Fayetteville, NC is flying my sister down next week for an interview. I've read some horrible things about Fayetteville and know we don't want to live there, but it doesn't seem any different than downtown Pittsburgh where a majority of the major hospitals in our area are located so working there isn't an issue. So I was wondering what the commute from Apex/Holly Springs to SW area of Fayetteville would actually be? MapQuest says something completely different than people we've talked to because some said 30 minutes and MapQuest said 85 minutes, which is quite a difference.

We've thought about Fuquay-Varina (know a couple there too), but really love being close to SW Raleigh and don't want to drive too far for anything. Being able to attend the Durham Bulls games and visit the American Tobacco District would be great, but don't mind driving for that. We want stores (grocery, Target, Kohl's), restaurants, etc. within a 20 minute drive at least. We would rent first (probably 1 year) and then buy later. Rent no more than $1000/mo. but preferably around $800 so we can save for a down payment. Are there any suggestions for us between Raleigh and Fayetteville? Anything I missed?

Thank you in advance for your help. This forum is great and I'm sure if we move I'll have a ton more questions!

On a side note: They are filming the next batman movie in Pgh and made it snow yesterday. My parents are participating in filming and they have to wear their winter coats at Heinz Field while its been in the 90s here.

I understand you don't feel comfortable "lying" about your address, but you're not doing so if you say "I can be contacted at....". You're providing contact information when you give them your resume/phone number, not proof of residency anywhere (unless they specifically state that they are looking for permanent local residents, which is another story).

If I may ask, what did you do before teaching? Could you go back to that? Also, would your sister be willing to work somewhere like Blue Cross Blue Shield, not necessarily practicing nursing? That's a huge company here.

I am in the HR field. I highly recommend you do DO NOT put a local address on your resume that contains out of town/current work info., it is a red flag, and for HR folks, a turn off. HR will ask you about connections to this area, this is when you state you have relatives here. This will count for more than putting a relative's address on your resume which comes across as disingenuous or dishonest.

For your sister, Cape Fear Valley would be a great place to work and gain experience. With less than 1 yr experience she is fortunate to have this opportunity. Rather than a sign-on bonus they may just pay relocation expenses (?) Does she has a BSN or AASN?

As for living in Fayetteville, I would want to hear from people who live there now and appear to be informed. I would post another thread asking about Fayetteville as a place to live for someone of your means, age, etc.
