Decent apartment within 30 minutes of Duke University (Bath: neighborhood, good schools)

I will be spending December 2011 through August 2012 working on a research project at Duke. Bringing the family along (wife and two sons, eight and five years old).

Will probably only be driving to campus two or three days per week, so don't have to be right in the neighborhood. But would like to be within 30 or 40 minutes.

Ideal place would be 3 BR and 2 Baths, clean, and safe. Good schools, but since only for half of kids school year, not that crucial a factor. Don't really need fancy clubhouse, exercise room, and all that kind of stuff -- but if available, we would probably make use of such things.

Would like to keep cost under $1000/month. So, does anyone have ideas or suggestions?
