The Copeland's (which was awesome btw) at Cary Crossroads was torn down about 5 years ago and a Red Robin was built in it's place. I'd venture that the Copeland's building was less than 5 years old. Even though Copeland's was a chain, I enjoyed the New Orleans cuisine they served there and their brunch was awesome.

That is odd, seems like the building could be reused, and that's it's wasteful to tear down a newer building that probably cost a lot to build. I have never been to the Southpoint location, but have been to the one in Briar Creek, the food was always excellent, hope they aren't going out of business!
Not necessarily, whatever maybe coming their may not be suitable in the existing layout and size of that structure. I see companies do it all the time while in NY. Also, there could be other issues such as a foundation issue that would necessitate just tearing down the building
Our nickname for Johnny Carino's was Johnny Crapino's. That food was just plain terrible!
I second that .. the food was not even average in my opinion I ate there under duress, because my mother insisted that she wanted to try a different restaurant other the ones that I keep taking her to whenever she visits the area ... needless to say I ended up telling her after the meal "I told you so"

Restaraunts are definitely specialized. From the newpaper lnk above, it seems like it might be retail rather than foodservice going in and it would very expensive to convert the building to any decent retail use. The only exception might be to just use it as is and put close racks in there like the ski place on Glenwood did to the steakhouse.
Last week I noticed that the Johnny Carino's restaurant near Southpoint (I-40 at Fayetteville Rd, Durham) was closed and yellow tape stretched around the building. Yesterday the Carino's building was torn down and debris is being hauled away.
I was initially thinking that they were going to renovate the restaurant, but with the complete demolition, that seems unlikely. If it were simply closing for business (or lack of) reasons, I would think the building would remain for re-sale. The expeditious closing and demo would seem to suggest there is something else planned on this site.
What gives?
What a shame this is. I enjoyed my meals there on many an occasion. It wasn't the best of the best, but I always found it solid. I could count on a good meal every time.
+1 for Brier Creek Johnny Carino's being a disgrace of an italian restaurant. If you want good italian at brier creek, go to Fratello's.
The Brier Creek Johnny Carino's is far better than the Streets at Southpoint one and you are correct in that they both are a far cry from Fratello's which is absolutely amazing.
Yes, I also heard that the people who own the land figured they could fit two businesses in there instead of just the one and increase their revenue. I went there once, and that was enough for me. I hope that they put something worthwhile there.
Best thing about Carino's is the free refills on flavored Italian sodas...nice to run through all of the flavors (with cream, of course) for one low price, but it takes commitment.
