Last week I noticed that the Johnny Carino's restaurant near Southpoint (I-40 at Fayetteville Rd, Durham) was closed and yellow tape stretched around the building. Yesterday the Carino's building was torn down and debris is being hauled away.

I was initially thinking that they were going to renovate the restaurant, but with the complete demolition, that seems unlikely. If it were simply closing for business (or lack of) reasons, I would think the building would remain for re-sale. The expeditious closing and demo would seem to suggest there is something else planned on this site.

What gives?

That is odd, seems like the building could be reused, and that's it's wasteful to tear down a newer building that probably cost a lot to build. I have never been to the Southpoint location, but have been to the one in Briar Creek, the food was always excellent, hope they aren't going out of business!

I wonder if there was something wrong with the building itself. I agree that it is extremely odd to demolish a building that was built in the last 5-10 years.

The Copeland's (which was awesome btw) at Cary Crossroads was torn down about 5 years ago and a Red Robin was built in it's place. I'd venture that the Copeland's building was less than 5 years old. Even though Copeland's was a chain, I enjoyed the New Orleans cuisine they served there and their brunch was awesome.

Anyhow, I think most of these chains have a specific building footprint so that you feel the same in all of them.... the only chain I can think of that has different designs is Cheesecake Factory. If you think about it all Olive Gardens, Outbacks, Red Robins, Chili's, etc look almost identical no matter where you are.

I'd guess that whatever is going in there had no use for the Johnny Carrino's footprint of the restaurant.

According to the Herald-Sun:

Quote:
He said the restaurant closed because the previous property owner, Zenzations, sold the building to Bristol, Tenn.-based KBM Commercial Properties.

Interesting....I wonder what will replace it.

Quote:
The building will be torn down to make way for two retail shops going up on that site.
My suggestions:
Trader Joes or Whole Foods (probably too small lot)
Chipotle (already 2 mex/southwestern places adjacent)
Bull City Brewery South (a guy can dream...)
A nice little park (OK, really dreamin' now)

Hopefully not another nail salon, cell phone peddler, or drive-thru fast food.

My wife and I ate there one time and it made the Olive Garden look like fine Italian dining. Looking forward to something new.

I once ate at the Johnny Carino's in Brier Creek and it was absolutely the worst Italian food I've ever had. Truly inedible.

I'm not surprised they did away with it. I ordered a martini there once, and they brought it out in a cocktail glass. The waiter said they didn't have any martini glasses clean at the time. We got up and left
