based on the headline, I expected nothing. Then I looked at the storm track and it is going to go right overhead.
hmm...too soon to tell, but considering we lost power last night for 3 hrs and had to scramble for flashlights & batteries, I think that being prepared is better than not!
Things we like to do:
make sure we have bottled water & flashlights propane tank filled for grill
plenty of coffee, wine/beer, dog food, cat food & things that the kids'll eat w/o a stove...
eyeball the freezer to see what can be 'grill cooked' and eat up anything else this week
If we are getting winds - we eyeball the outside and bring in anything that'll become a 'missile'
If we are getting the rains - put in the 'tubes' for our gutters to divert water AWAY from the foundation a bit better
oh - and we charge EVERYTHING so when the power goes out, we have some form of technology for at least a little while!
What do y'all do?
Hmmm...now, what to make for 'hurricane weekend'. That is always fun to consider.
This was a great list! I didn't even think about the propane tank when I was thinking about things we needed to stock up on. But, how do you make coffee without a coffee maker? I'm sorry if that's a stupid question.

You can heat the water over propane and pour it over the coffee filter (obviuosly in something other than the pot that's sitting under it).
Or you can stock up on "Coffee singles" that are like tea bags, but with coffee.

Hopefully your propane grill has a side burner to make it quicker. Then you use a camping pot or just boil water and use a French press ... worst part is the darn coffee pot timer doesn't work ...

I'm not hip to anything! I had no idea there were "coffee singles"! I have always been quite worried, for everyone else's sake, about not having coffee if we were to lose electricity for any extended period of time. Thank you for the tips!

We also make sure the gas tanks in our cars are full. Gas pumps don't work if the electricity is out.
Oh, and we make sure we know where our manual can opener is (or we get a new one) so we can open all those can goods we stocked up on.

I wised up and got a camping coffee percolator that goes on the side burner of the grill -- it is right nice!
We used to own a generator but sold it after we realized we only used it for the coffee maker. hahhaha! it wasn't big enough to run a fridge or heaters (winter ice storem)...so we sold the generator and bought the coffee percolator.
Great thought about gassing up the cars -- that is another great tip. stocking up on juice boxes or seltzer -- something to drink other than water.
The other good idea I heard was to freeze bottles of water in your freezer now. Then, if the power goes out - transfer the frozen water bottles into your fridge to keep it colder, longer.
