Best Internet Service Provider (ISP) in Durham
What options are there out there. I am moving to Durham in a month. I currently have Time Warner, but was wondering what else might be available.
Thanks!
Matt

I think TWC pretty much dominates the scene around here.

I have Time Warner but I've heard that FIOS from Verizon is great, and I believe it's available in Durham.

FIOS wasn't avaiable in my ZIP of 27703, so I went with Earthlink Broadband. Funny thing is they lease thier lines from TWC but offered me a better intro price (29.99X12) then $41 after that. This was for 5mbs down and 1.5 up. TWC even came to do the install but hey if you can get the same service for less money why not.

Yup
I'd agree w/Earthlink or TWC.
Note, TWC can beat Earthlink's price if you have a combo with other services, like HD digital cable and such.
FIOS is not available in Durham to my knowledge. Once it comes, though, it will be far and away the best thing out there for now. The only thing to beware of w/FIOS is that they apparently have been cutting the copper cable from the cable company going into the house (really makes it problematic to switch back to cable) in the DC market. My brother got FIOS in the DC area recently and reported that to me. I'm not sure if it is a widespread issue or a local thing up there.
I tried Verizon DSL for a little bit recently. Frankly, it annoyed the heck out of me. It was slower (not slow, but not what I'm used to). And, it wanted me to install some extras that I did not want (free for a couple months and then you have to pay). B/c I never installed the extras, I kept getting pop-up ads from Verizon about them. We also kept getting phone calls from Verizon telling us we needed to "complete" our installation. And, on top of that, the crappy modem they sent us (which was an upgraded modem) wouldn't work with wireless router. Their modem included a wireless g router, but I use a wireless n router. And their modem disabled my external HD. My wife called to cancel and the rep tried to talk her into yet another modem upgrade. I called them when I got home and canceled. I've used a variety of ISPs over the years (hit the web early), and this was far and away the worst ISP experience I have ever had.
Embarq may be a reasonable option, but I'm not sure where it is available.
fwiw,
Mike

How about clearwire ( Clearwire: Wireless Broadband Internet Service Home and Office) for ISP? I just got a coupon in the sunday paper that has a 3 month deal for only $14.99 a month.
Thoughts?
