Default Bowling

We are moving to Cary soon, and both DH and I are big candlepin bowling fans. Are there any candlepin lanes in or around Cary? If not, what types of bowling lanes are there? Thanks so much!!

Candlepin bowling is a New England thing and as far as I've seen there in no candlepin bowling in the Triangle area. Only ten-pin bowling. Might be an interesting business proposition with all the transplants. For those who have no clue what candlepin bowling is, here is a link to wikipedia's decription.

Quick summary the pins are narrow and tall like candles. There are ten of then set up like 10-pin bowling. The difference is you roll palm sized balls without any holes, but having substantive heft. You have three rolls instead of two and the fallen pins aren't cleaned between the rolls. I think the "frames" are called "boxes"

For what it's worth...

Honestly, I had to look this one up. I learned something new today.

I had never heard of candlepin bowling, I am surprised that we don't have that here considering all the new ppl that move here.
But, a quick search and wikipedia shows "that Candlepin bowling is a variation of bowling that is confined to the New England states, and to the Canadian Maritime provinces of New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia (with one isolated candlepin center in Wyoming, Ohio, a suburb of Cincinnati)."

Most of the bowling here is traditional ten pin bowling.
Here are 2 that I know of in Cary:

AMF Bowling Center
301 Nottingham Dr, Cary - (919) 467-2411

Buffaloe Lanes Cary Family
151 High House Rd, Cary - (919) 468-8684

Wow, talk about regional differences! Being that we have both have lived in MA and NH all our lives, we have never known anyone who did not know what candlepin was! Guess our balls and shoes will be going into storage when we move!

Do the 10 pine lanes have leagues? It is a great place to get to know folks, we have found!

Thanks so much and glad I could help educate

What about Duckpin Bowling? Wiki says that it is located in Virginia eastward, so I was not sure if that had made its way South to NC yet?

There is only one place in all of North Carolina where you can go duckpin bowling and, unfortunately, I think it's on the western side of the state. I only know this because a friend had to go there on a work-related errand (it's a long story!).

Edited to add:
Just found this by doing a goodle search. I think this is where he went.

Mountain Lanes (704) 739-3446

(4 Lanes) [NOTES: The alleys operate during the summer on a sort of 'by appointment only' basis. They have leagues and open bowling September to May, but in the summer don't keep regular hours.

Thanks for the info on the league. We don't move until October, so maybe we will try the Spring leagues, if they have them!

If we ever take a trip out to the Western part of the state, we will have to try Mountain Lanes!

Thanks everyone!
