My favorite of the 3 new places is the Fox Liquor Lounge. Had a drink that was just perfect at the soft opening last week. Beasley's is very good, but as infrequently as I'm eating downtown, I'll go ahead and spent the money on Poole's.

It's on the corner of Martin and Wilmington downtown. The owner, Ashley Christensen, has gained some fame from the food world over the past year for Poole's Diner, including some nice write-ups in major magazines and more recently for her appearance on Iron Chef. You can think of Beasley's as the more casual, chicken centric outpost of Poole's.

I work downtown on Fayetteville Street so my co-workers and I try to check out new places as they open. And the good places, we keep going back too. And I must say the food is very very good. The chicken, Macaronni and pimento cheese and salad with grilled tomato and buttermilk dressing is delicious as is their Rhubarb & Peach Cheesecake. But I must admit it is pricey especially as a weekday lunch option for downtowners.

If you plan to go there once in a blue moon and take a stroll though downtown though it is fine, it's more of a destination then. I feel like they should have a lunch menu, most people cannot justify a $20 lunch on like a Tuesday afternoon, especially in 2011.

Even if they did some sort of combo meal for lunch, such that you weren't having to pay $3.50 for the freaking side would help.

I second the thoughts here. I went last Thursday and the honey chicken is delicious! The "biscuit" they serve it on was very dry and crumbly however. The pimento mac and cheese was great, but if you have ever been to Poole's you know the mac and cheese is awesome. They really need to work on the lunch menu for the folks that work down here. $11 for a chicken sandwich, with a side of mac and cheese and a water with tip is too much in my opinion. I would like to see a $7 combo meal with maybe a smaller portion of chicken come with a side and a water. I tried to go the first week they opened and it was packed. Last week the place was only half full. Looks like the word is getting out about the prices. This is a great place for a destination lunch but I doubt the folks that work downtown will frequent it until they get the menu and pricing worked out for lunch.

As a fan of Poole's we hit beasley's yesterday....overall, the chicken was great. They should give you 3 pieces though, i got the dark plate and honestly, a leg and a thigh just isnt enough food. The flavor is great....very crispy, the honey is a nice touch.

We had the mac n cheese, potato salad, and greens. All average. Lots of hype for that mac n cheese and i really wasnt that impressed. Potato salad was good but wasnt expecting sauerkraut in there (what i think was sauerkraut). Greens were standard.

Overall ill be back, but not super thrilled. The chcken was the only really good aspect. Also disappointed that chicken n waffles are only offered late night and brunch. From a business perspective, its genius, i get driving demand for a unique offering, but that cant last forever as the dish is becoming more popular and weve got more options downtown and elsewhere. I can go to Dame's in Durham anytime and get it...dont think im going to mark my calendar to try and fit in when beasley's is willing to serve it.

I went yesterday for lunch ( one of my coworkers was complaining about the price at the outset! but he does catch and eat squirrels)

There are three chicken items on the menu ( 2 really 'cos one is only available late evening) and a special

I had the chicken biscuit with pickled green tomato and honey and it was very good $7.50. I also had a side, Hooks 3 year pimento cheese mac custard, and that was very good too. It cost $11 + tip, so a $13 lunch

I thought it was good and I will go back again but it's not SO good that I would go weekly

FWIW I think the 2/3 item menu will kill the place, it's shockingly restrictive when you see it on the wall. I don't think you need a 50 item lunch menu but you do need more choices than they give currently

$7.99 is a good price point , including the side, for me

Oh, and they don't serve any diet drink products ( except unsweetened tea) , so you're stuck with water

I hate to say it but I found Beasley's to be disappointing. The food was good, but not great. And I detected a little bit of the Poole's attitude from some of the staff which is such a turnoff.

It's an Ashley Christensen restaurant. Her restaurants and Empire Eats are generally understood as the primer places to eat in downtown. Anyone complaining about price at one of her restaurants shouldn't get a whole lot of sympathy. Go there to spend money and eat well. Too expensive? Trying eating less. Consider dining with a friend and sharing/trying each others dishes. Will it be the best food you've ever eaten? Maybe, but probably not. It's certainly worth going to on occasion.
