Default Do parts of Holly Springs smell like the Dump???

My husband and I are looking into possibly purchasing a home in the Forest Springs neighborhood (off Hwy 55/ New Hill Rd.) When he mentioned this to coworkers who also live in Holly Springs, they warned him that in the New Hill Rd area you can smell the nearby dump.

Is this true?? I would hate to buy our "dream house" and not be able to enjoy that screened porch!

We live in Holly Springs in Sunset Oaks and I have never once smelled the dump. I go to Walmart in Holly Springs as well and I have never smelled it there either.

I routinely travel to New Hill to a location right across the street from the dump, and have never smelled it. I'm sure if the wind blows just perfectly, maybe you could catch a wiff.... but I never have.

Default Dump or Landfill???

HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. — The South Wake Landfill in Holly Springs opened Thursday, and some residents said they worry it will trash their town.

The new facility, which could get as many as 2,000 tons of trash a day, is on 471 acres at Main Street and N.C. Highway 55. A wooded area surrounds the dumping ground, and landfill officials said residents won’t even know it’s there.

The term dump is a very old school term. It does have this vision of trash everywhere, wild cats and dogs eat garbage, rats eating the cats & dogs and vultures circling over head. True is. That was years ago. Landfill now are tightly ran. With all new MSW (Household/ Commercial Solid Waste) landfills falling under tight regulations. They must be lined, with a water and drainage collection system, treatment of the water collected. This is to protect ground waste. Daily covering of waste. Tracking of waste as it comes in the landfill. Stricter regs as what can be thrown away in these landfills. Separation of recyclable materials. Bans on certain items. Larger Buffers.

Yes you do have a Landfill.

I doubt you would since it's on the opposite side of town. Even going to Walmart every now and then, you might not smell is.

It's highly possible. We live off 55 closer to Fuquay, but traveling along 55 at certain times of day (and when the wind is blowing that way), yeah, you smell it. There's a stretch of the 55 by-pass that is quite rank at times.

Only homes that are right behind strip malls. Those dumpsters behind grocery stores and restaurants smell worse than any landfill.

I live in Holly Springs and travel by the landfill every day on my way to/from work. I've only smelled it maybe a total of 3 or 4 times. Typically it's on those hot, humid mornings, and I imagine a breeze took the smell to 55. Even so, it wasn't an overpowering smell, just enough that you knew something was there.

Landfill technology is so far advanced compared to the days of the "dump". The landfill is covered every night and a flame is used to burn off the methane gas (the smell you get from the landfill).

I'd be concerned about the health risks associated with living near a "dump" as well as the odor.
