Hey, y'all,

Quick question: I've been looking into getting a second water meter installed at a house in Cary for future irrigation work, and I'm having trouble finding the current total price for having that done. I know the cost has increased substantially in recent years, and it's gotten quite expensive, but I don't know exactly how expensive. If I can't find out by tomorrow, I can just call the Town of Cary, of course, but I wanted to find out today because I'm spending this dreary Sunday doing some cipherin' on future budgets. So far, I haven't been able to find the current, bottom-line price including all fees and costs on the Town's website, or elsewhere on the internet, but maybe I'm just not looking in the right place. Regardless, if anybody who is on Cary water (but not in the reclaimed water area, unfortunately) has done this recently, would you please let me know what that cost you?

Thanks!

Here is the link to the fees, but when you click on the link for Irrigation Meter Fees, it returns an invalid page/PDF file.

My builder told me that it was 5,000 just for the meter.

Well, yeah, thanks, but I saw that, too, which is why I asked the question here.

Holy smokes! Yikes! I know it had gone up, but I hope that's not right. I was thinking somewhere in the $1500 to $2500 range. Did the builder seem to be marking-up the price of getting a new meter, or did he indicate that 5-grand was the actual cost that Cary would charge him to do it? Wow. Regardless, thank you very much for the response, but again, I hope you're inaccurate.

They told me that was the actual cost from the town for the second meter. It was a shock to me and I passed on it.

It cannot be $5000....we looked into this last year for the same exact reason....irrigation.....the cost was more like $1750 for the 2nd meter.

Have you considered some of the blue rain barrels that you find on our local craigslist and making your own setup? Those 55 gallon blue barrels are about $15 on Craigslist! I bought 6 of them when I moved here to collect our immense amounts of rain. The entire lawn system is only as much as a pump costs to run electric to!

Edit: Here's the Instructable link for making your own:

We live in Cary & just had our irrigation & meter installed in February 2011. The fee just for the second meter from Cary is $2037 - we started for a permit in October 2010 & the fee then was $1937 it went up a little during our process and they wouldn't let us grandfather in to the previous price. Whoever has a builder saying $5000 is getting ripped off from the builder. So the current meter fees for Cary are $2037 in 2006 the price was $800. They say the fees are higher now because they are changing to reclaimed water line infrastructure. Althought at this time there is now exact date for when this reclaimed water infrastructure will be complete - I was told could be up to 10 years by Town of Cary. I live in West Cary and the reclaimed water lines end at Thomas Brooks Park

I would pay to have the second meter put in tomorrow if it were on reclaimed water. Since I live on a small lot it would be about a 20 year payback at the current rates. There just is not enough discount to make up for the fees on normal water. Hopefully they are looking to expand the system.
