First off, please forgive me if this thread is discussing an "illegal" topic. I'm new to the COUNTRY (Go Canada!) so I'd like to hear real answers and figured we know best here!!
Are poker games legal, or illegal in Raleigh? If its not allowed, go no further. I'm a loving texas hold'em fan, and would like to start hosting a game. But, I want to make sure that John Q. Law isnt going to be taking me to prison first.
So what's the skinny on Poker here? Any existing games if they are allowed? I'd like to start hosting 20 player tournaments that when people get "knocked out" they then go play a cash game with whoever wants one. Nothing terribly high stakes, $1-$2 NL probably?
Thanks everyone! I really appreciate the help
By the way, I should mention, I'd prefer to go to a game (and host one like this) where there are no rakes, fees, or other BS. I dont want to profit from hosting or have someone else profit from hosting. Sure, a few bucks to pitch in on snacks and food is cool.

Home games are legal. If you start advertising your home game and getting a big, regular crowd, then you could potentially start attracting attention. If you start taking a rake or house fee, then that is clearly illegal, and where you can get into trouble.
That's not how I read the statute below, although I think it is rarely enforced for low stake games.
14‑292. Gambling.Except as provided in Chapter 18C of the General Statutes or in Part 2 of this Article, any person or organization that operates any game of chance or any person who plays at or bets on any game of chance at which any money, property or other thing of value is bet, whether the same be in stake or not, shall be guilty of a Class 2 misdemeanor. This section shall not apply to a person who plays at or bets on any lottery game being lawfully conducted in any state.
Thanks don, I think the hard part for poker to apply to that statute would be the "game of chance", isnt the poker argument that we're playing a game of skill? I'm not sure how Americans apply the law here or read it too well though, but that's what caught my eye. Thanks!!
I remember several years ago someone tried to open a Poker Parlor in Durham. Was trying to get the State to say poker was a game of skill. Dont know what ever happened to that....never heard about it again.
There have been several poker games "busted" by law enforcement around here. Does that mean every home game is illegal? I have my doubts. I think the ones that got busted were actually being run like little casinos. I know a lot of people who play home games with friends.
