Get a quote from an independent agent first, which will quote multiple carriers at once, and then you can use that quote to compare with "captive" agents, like Farm bureau, Amica, State Farm, etc. You will be better off that way. You can just use that quote to fax/email to the captive agents to make the comparison easier.
As long as the carrier has a good rating and customer support, there is no "best", it all depends on your particular situation. I have about 15 different carriers that I use, but I can't tell you which will be "best" for you until I rate you with each one depending on your situation. I do agree that Travelers, Safeco, and Hartford are very competitive in NC..... AllState and Statefarm..... really?? Maybe if you don't own a home. I like Kemper and State Auto as well.
