I can't believe how lame our radio is here considering all we have going for us.

680 on the AM dial does a good traffic report "on the 8's" (5:08, 5:18, 5:28, etc.)
Majority of the time my radio is set on 101.1. However, when Allan Handelman's show sucks that day I'll listen to either 100.7 or 96.1. I'm starting to enjoy the new format on 96.1.
I don't know how it's possible but almost every time I've put on 96.1 since the change they've been either playing 867-5309 or Pat Benatar. Maybe I just have horrible luck.
88.1 is my latest favorite. They play very few commercials. Some of the music is a little WTH, but it is usually listenable. I think I went a month without hearing the same song twice. The cool thing is on the weekends they have 2 hour blocks of all different kinds of music which I like. Too bad more stations don't realize radio might make more money if they treated it like and art and not a business.

88.1 isn't a business. It's a radio station that's ran by NCSU students which explains the lack of commercials and such a random playlist.

WKNC is run much more like a commercial radio station than most college stations though. They began that approach in the early 2000s and it's apparently worked well for them.
I'm still bemoaning the death of Smooth Jazz as a radio format in the U.S. as a whole. I feel like they threw the baby out with the bath water.
Basically, corporate-run radio stations (Clear Channel, etc.) just plain SUCK. Ten or 15 vapid songs on a playlist.
I noticed the same thing others mentioned with satellite radio. I noticed their playlists can be shallow, too - ESPECIALLY the 80s and 90s stations. WHY are you playing the same handful of songs when you have a WHOLE DECADE of music to choose from? "Humpty Dance" AGAIN Sirius 90s?

Me, too. I am a fan of 101.1, and I listen to it most of the time (I usually skip Michael Savage and Neal Boortz). Handelman is hit-or-miss. He has good shows sometimes, but I hate the show topics he loves and tends to repeat - legalizing weed, how much are your old toys worth, psychotronic movies (never was quite sure what that means), and interviews with old rock musicians I don't care for.

I rarely am near a radio to listen to Dr. Savage but Boortz is awesome. He's a libertarian so he dogs republicans and democrats and tells it how it is. It's nice to hear the truth about both sides and majority of the stuff he preaches I verify it's validity and I've always found it to be true.
The standard classic rock station is a bore, but 96 "Rock" has been crappy for years so who cares? Now it is just another station for those who like to listen to the same 20 songs everyday of their lives for the past 20 and the next 20 years of their lives.
Michael
