Hello,I am moving to Raleigh soon.I live in a small town with really no opportunities for jobs, college,or things to do for my kids to keep them occupied.I was just wondering what kind of programs or activities the city has for teens and children. My kids are 16,15,14,9 and 6.On the job end of it,would the older to girls be able to find a job easily?just a part time job, min wage, something for them to earn money and learn to budget, etc. Also, I have a CNA certificate, would we really be able to make it down there if I work full time doing a cna job?I would need a 3 bedroom apartment at least...Are there alot of jobs in nursing homes down there?Sorry for so many questions, just feeling nervous....any input would be greatly appreciated..thank you so much

Lots of nursing home jobs, but you'd really need to get your RN to make good money here.

Many of the traditional part time jobs for kids have been taken by (hopefully legal) immigrants. Years ago, stores were offering all kinds of deals to attract students. Not now.

Rentals for a 3BR in a decent area can come close to $1,000 with utilities.

Unless you could get a Section 8 housing voucher (long wait), you might not be able to swing it here.

I'd really try for that RN. It's a ticket to good pay.

It may also be that Raleigh may not have as good a public transportation system, etc. as your town in Minnesota. It covers a big geographical area and the sidewalk and bus system aren't terrific in all of it. The older towns in the North tend to be better that way: designed for pedestrians and snowy winters. This might make it harder for teenagers to find work without a car and the associated expense. I wish you the best. I'm just trying to help you think of as many possible considerations as possible.

If you don't mind my asking, why are you considering a move down here? I am from here but lived in St. Paul for 10 years, and I'm not sure this area offers more than the Twin Cities and I don't think cost-of-living is much (if any) cheaper. It sounds like you are not in the Cities now, but why are you thinking of moving here vs. there?

Actually, the cost of living in Minneapolis has risen considerably,I haven't lived there for about 15 years now, but even living in the ghetto is high priced.I wanted to come to Raleigh to further my education, and get a brand new start for my kids. The town we live in now only has a bus called dial a ride and it stops running at 6 p.m.My oldest daughter has been looking for job since the beginning of summer and hasn't found one.You know you're in a really small town when even Mcdonald's has workers all the time. The cost of living here is affordable,I'm in Cloquet,Mn,but there aren't any real opportunities for our future. That is why I want to relocate and go somewhere where there are plenty of activites for the kids, opportunities for their future and mine, jobs, and is fairly affordable.I am not scared of working fulltime or overtime,in fact I'm used to it,I have too many kids to support. My main concern is that my kids have every opportunity I can give them for the future. Most kids around here are so bored that they turn to drinking, drugs, and trouble at a young age, and I will do everything I can to prevent mine from ruining their future. My oldest wants to be a medical examiner,my 15 yr old wants to join the Marines, and my 14 yr old wants to be a chef.Lots of kids around here don't even know what they want to do,but mine do and I will not let this little town ruin their dreams.Ok sorry to go on for so long I'm just very passionate about this move and know that it's the right thing to do.Yes,I have been to New Ulm once, but it was when I was younger and don't really remember too much of it.Thanks for listening

I don't think you should be discouraged to move here. Several years ago thhis area was voted one of the best places for a single mom to live. It is going to be tough at times but you are a single mom with 5 kids, you already know that! There are lots of jobs for teens. I know the city parks and rec employ teens to umpire and keep score at baseball games, work in their community centers, etc. There are also babysitting, lawn mowing, pet sitting opportunities in most neighborhoods. Then there are the fast food joints, mall, YMCA, etc. I can't address the payscale for your job but you sound like you plan to continue schooling anyway. This is a great, mostly safe, family friendly place to live. The people I know are optimistic about their life and future. If you are looking for a "fresh start" I think you can find it here. I wish you all the best in your new adventure.

My ex-wife lives in Cloquet, and you're right, there is nothing much there and little opportunity. In all honesty, I think you'd have a hard time supporting a family of 5 on a CNA salary in Raleigh. I don't live there, but my brother does, and I've lived in NC for 10 years, so I'm quite familiar with the area. I wish you the best of luck and hope you can get out of that dead-end town up there. I never liked visiting my ex's family when we were married up there in Cloquet, and I can't imagine living there. I hope you can get out soon. Maybe Raleigh is the place, but I think you'd have a tough time, at least to start.
