I am relocating to Raleigh next year and have been looking at rental in Cameron Park area (on Smallwood) and also in Mordecai (near Clover Lane). Can anyone help me in figuring out some of the differences in the personalities of these two neighborhoods? Hard to do when you're not "on the ground" there yet.

Thanks!

Oh, sorry! I should have added that I like pedestrian living, hoping to not have a car at all. I also am on a tight budget, probably looking for pretty small apartment to start. I love older architecture - I'll take hardwood floors over carpet any time!

Smallwood is walking distance to Cameron Village, so that would win for me hands down. I looked at Clover Lane Townhomes when first moving here and, while they were cute, it seemed to be on the edge of the Mordecai area and the "regular" area, rather then immersed in it. Nice area too, but if I recall there is way less walkability.

My sentiments exactly.

+1 on the above. I live in the Cameron Village apts when I first moved here from DC and it was great to be walking distance to CAm village, and frankly from Glenwood South now (or at least pedicab distance!).

if you want pedestrian living in Wake County, it's not going to be any better than living in Cameron Village Apartments/condos. Everything you could need - except a movie theater - is within 2 blocks.

Another vote for Cameron Village area. If you like old architecture and are on a budget, I'd look at the Raleigh Apartments. They are just east of Cameron Village and walkable to it and the Glenwood South district of Downtown. From Glenwood South, you can hop the free R-Line bus to access all the downtown districts.

BoBromhal, you hit a nail on the head regarding a movie theater! However, using one's feet and the RLine, access to the IMAX downtown is doable. I have been many times and have never driven to it.

Ah, I remember walking over to the movie theater in Cameron Village from my apartment there in the late '80's...does that make me sound old?

would it have been late 80's? Trying to remember. Was it where the Harris Teeter is now? The Drug Store?

That's a really good question. I don't remember and I was at NC State starting in 1980. Hmm.... I don't recall a movie theater there but that doesn't mean it wasn't. I do remember the movie theater on Hillsborough but that was mostly for late night pornos for drunk frat boys.

I can tell you that the Harris Teeter (previously Big Star) was where the drug store is now.
