Found a home we actually like, like the neighborhood, commute etc but, there were mouse droppings, a fair amount in the pantry and a little more....
If we really can get rid of them I still want to close but what do u think? Do they ever really go away?

Mice can slip through a hole the size of a dime, and many homes have those holes.
And once they nest, they do not move far from their source of food. They do not travel long distances for food and water, but nest near it.
There are stories of mice moving into a pallet of grain in warehouses and just living within a few feet of the same location for generations.
Most mice enter homes through a crawlspace and past plumbing or electrical or heating penetrations.

Ergo, they can be controlled with some effort.
Tighten the house.
Traps, poison, glue boards are all effective.

Default Cat!

Those that escape the cat with their lives will likely relocate to a neighboring house to avoid your soft, cuddly, and ravenous carnivore.

they also tend to move in when it gets cold...so I hear there are plenty of cats available for adoption...and they are fantastic pets!

They won't go away and no way to keep them out, you have to exterminate them. Quick kill traps baited with peanut butter worked best for me when I had them in my garage. I would avoid poison because they may crawl into the wall and die and decompose there. Also, poison is often inhumane. I never thought I would feel sorry for a rat, but back when I was in college, we had one and put out poison. Found him one day just shivering and shaking, looking pathetic and unable to move. Dispatched him with a shovel, but have never used poison again.

That said, if I were buying a house I wouldn't consider DIY. I would negotiate for a professional exterminator and not close until it got a clean bill of health from them.

As pp said - don't DIY...we had a mouse last year. Called an exterminator and saw the cute little guy the next 2 nights and then never again. Never got to the point where we saw droppings in the house but exterminator saw them in the crawl space areas. Exterminator assured us we would not eradicate on our own and for $75 we were more than happy to let him handle it.

Definitely NOT a reason to pass up a house you like! Have the realtor arrange for an exterminator.

Go buy a few old fashion mouse traps. Bait them with peanut butter. Set them in the areas where you suspect mice and they'll will be gone in no time
