Thank you all for the input. We are actually sealing all of those areas ourselves this weekend. My son's room is the worst, and I felt air coming from around the light. I don't think that I feel comfortable with doing it myself, but know that it needs to be done.
I'll be calling places on Monday, and hopefully will find someone able to help. I'm just very concerned about companies in this economy. I've heard some horror stories lately about shoddy work all in the name of a dollar. We don't seem to be in a great time frame for consistently reputable work.
I would recommend getting an energy audit first before deciding that more insulation is what you need. It may be that air-sealing alone will have more of an impact and it might be more cost-effective. If you can feel air coming from gaps in the ceiling more insulation isn't going to help.
Our family business is energy audits + weatherization, including insulation and I agree with you - check reputation, online reviews, and get references. Word of mouth (by 'real life' folks) is always a good way to check people out. There are a lot of people doing what we do and very inconsistent quality, customer service, and poor communication. Then again, there are plenty of local firms doing the exact opposite!
Good luck!
