Harris Teeter has a pretty good selection overall and quality . The best and freshest vegetables ( i recommend that you go to Farmers Markets ) are found at Fresh Market as well as their meats . You cannot beat that and also check their special Tuesdays . Each month they have specials on Tuesdays and they are worth the trip for such quality . The best selections of cheeses are at Earth Fare in Raleigh . Amazing selections of European cheeses . Whole Foods is big on wonderful cheeses from Europe and the USA . In Carrboro , the Weaver Street supermarket has excellent artisan US cheeses who are of the standard of the best French cheeses . And their vegetables are locally grown and organic for most . One of the best stores for vegetables .
Trader Joe' s is a fine cheap organic . Nice store , good choices of inexpensive wines and overall good selection of can goods , deli meats and already prepared dishes as well as interesting candies and cookies .
For household and everyday items , Super Walmart and Target are the places to go . The new SuperWalmart in Morrisville has more '' upscale " items and it is the one i recommend .
I like Harris Teeter & Lowe's Food...for specialty items like meat, seafood, bakery, I go to Fresh Market or Whole Foods...A Southern Season in Chapel Hill also has a great selection of specialty cheeses/meats, etc...so worth the trip especially around the holidays...love the ginger snaps in the holiday tin as well...mmmm...I'm hungry now...hahaha Happy Holidays All
I don't think I have EVER paid $4 a pound for ground beef or chicken, and I buy most of my meat from Harris Teeter and Whole Foods. Heck, even when I buy my chicken from the farmers' market it's not that expensive. Maybe you've been shopping on Sucker Customer Day
I was just there today. Ground beef was:
$4.99 (on sale) for 90%
$5.99 regular price for 96%
$4.99 regular price for 85%
Boneless, skinless chicken breast was $4.99 a pound and they had a buy one/get one but that still makes it $2.49 a pound.
I won't buy them at those prices, but it's pretty $$$ compared to where I used to live.
I usually buy chicken from Fresh Market, when it's on sale for $2.99/lb. (This is for boneless, skinless.) I used to buy chicken from Lowes Foods, but I can taste a difference, and the Fresh Market chicken tastes better. I stock up, so that I only buy when it's on sale.
I agree with you...I wish I had a fresh market a little closer. Their meat and poultry is good and I can definitely tell the difference.

Yes, those are the typical everyday prices. They do have occasional sales. The 93% lean angus ground beef was on sale last week for $2.99/lb. I know that other places may have it cheaper, but the QUALITY is not as great and I can taste the difference. I always buy ALOT of meat when it's on sale so I don't end up paying the regular prices. I stocked up and bought at least 15 packages last week.
Like another poster mentioned, the quality of meats at Walmart and Food Lion is poor. Sometimes the food is rotten as well.

I will pick up a few packs when it's on sale too, most of the times I just get ground beef and chicken at BJ's though.
I just never thought I'd pay more for a gallon of milk than I would for gasoline!

Agreed. I'd rather pay a few more cents per pound for better quality meat. Last time I bought ground beef at Lowes Foods it had a horrible stench to it.
I haven't stepped foot in Walmart in 10 years, and would never dream of buying food there. God knows where it comes from - and with all the stories of tainted food from China, I'm not taking the risk.

I'm not sure if you're referring to HT or Whole Foods, but $2.49 for boneless, skinless chicken breast is a good price. If it was at WF or Fresh Market, I'd be stocking up.
I'll have to say I've been pleasantly surprised by the Wal Mart off 54 in Morrisville near Durham. Their produce has been of very good quality and they have as good a selection or better than HT most of the time. For some reason they just can t seem to keep red onions in stock.
I still shop at HT though for the most part as its closer but don't worry about substandard stuff when I do go to Wal Mart.
Boneless, Skinless Chicken breasts @ $4.79/lb.

A little GOOG fun with my coffee
Wow, that's the Wegman's my husband worked in during his high school and college days, a zillion years ago. We go there every time we are in Rochester.
And Harris Teeter has boneless, skinless chicken breasts on sale for $1.99/lb this week.
