Can anyone post where the larger "flagship" type grocery stores are in the area? I'm looking for the stores that have the largest variety/selection of specialty items, cheeses, good bakery etc.

Regular grocery stores? I'd say Harris Teeter or Lowes. We hit Harris Teeter for specialty cheeses, olive bar, bakery bread, etc. Lowes is trying it's best to keep up, so sometimes they have the same items (but maybe not as much of a selection) for a better price.

We hit Super Walmart for staples, canned goods, and whatever crap we feed the kids . And wine. Nothing like good, cheap wine from Walmart to go with your fancy Harris Teeter cheese .

For large chains, I'd say Harris Teeter.

Overall, Harris Teeter definitely has best selection but, depending on the item, it may be reflected in the price. Its the place to go though for specialty cheeses, breads and that sort of thing.

Harris Teeter is about as good as you're gonna get with regards to specialty items around here, unless you went to a Whole Foods. Lowes Foods is getting better, especially if you can find one of their newer stores.

Even HT doesn't carry all the same items in all their stores though. I imagine the North Hills store has a deep selection with more high end stuff. Around me, the Stone Creek village store does not carry Maple View Farms milk but the Davis/Mccrimmon and 55/high house stores do.

I like the Taj- ma-Teeter on Tryon Road and the one over by Lochmere!

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by "flagship"...when I see that term I think of stores within a family of stores owned by the same company.

Aside from that, using your criteria of "variety/selection of specialty items, cheeses, good bakery etc.", I would say your answer is Whole Foods. If I had to rank in order of the criteria listed above I would rank the stores:

Whole Foods
Harris Teeter
Lowe's Foods
Trader Joe's
Kroger
Food Lion
Wal-Mart

And price would follow that list as well from highest to lowest. Hope that helps.

I'm not sure I would point to a run-of-the-mill grocery store as the go to place for speciality items.
