Pretty close to the Maynard and Harrison area you're looking for: the Citgo at Chapel Hill and Reedy Creek.
The air is hard to find though. Coming in the western driveway on Chapel Hill, there's a fenced-in storage area. At the front left corner of that fence is an air hose, free to use.
Won't most places turn on the air for free for customers? I'm not sure that I've done it since I lived here, but back in TX I'd pump some gas then pull the car over to the air station and go in and ask them to turn it on and they always did.
Most air pumps now are little stand-alone machines/stations that you drive next to, put your money in, and push start for the pump to begin.
I went ahead and purchased a small air compressor (from Sears automotive) to keep my tire pressures right. Got tired of driving all over the place to find a pump that worked and didn't like the idea of paying for air anyway. The one I have just plugs into the cars 12volt outlet. Not expensive .... ask Santa to bring you one !
Never knew about this. I know what I'm picking up next weekend.

I've owned a 12V (what we used to call a "cigarette lighter" plug) air pump/tire inflator for years. They work fine, although not as quickly as the gas station pumps.
The only advice I'd add - don't trust the accuracy of the gauge on the pump. Use a separate tire pressure gauge.
You are going to spend more money in gas trying to find a free station then just paying the .50 cents.
I have on board air in my jeep, and a 60 gallon compressor in the garage though, but if I am not home, I don't worry about the 50 cents.
