Emily Procter was born and raised in Raleigh as was Sharon Lawrence(NYPD Blue). Ava Gardner is from Smithfield. Pistol Pete Maravich played basketball at Broughton. Tory Holt(future NFL Hall of Famer) has a home in Wakefield. A little known Raleigh fact- The first black heavyweight champ- The great Jack Johnson died in a car wreck in Raleigh in 1949. One more Cliff Claven factoi- Duke hosted and played in the only Rose Bowl not played in California in 1942.This was after the japs bombed Pearl Harbor and the fear was that they would sneak attack the Rose Ball game as well. NFL hall of qb's Sonny Jurgenson and Roman Gabriel are from Wilmington, as is MJ, and Meadowlark Lemon. Charlie Rose is from Henderson. Mayu Angelo(sp?) is from Winston. W J Cash is from the piedmont(he is famous for writing a still studied book called The Mind of The South in the early 1940's). Former Harlem Globtrotter great Charles Twiggy Sanders is a Raleigh boy. Our former sheriff Big John Baker played many years in the NFL and is famous for ending YA Tittles career with a hit that left Tittle bloodied and confused. Is still a famous photo.

Don't ask me how I know this, but I believe that Clay Aiken lived in a newer gated neighborhood near 751 just over the Chatham County line; not in North Raleigh. I'm not going to name it, because believe it or not, he has some serious stalkers who Google him all over the internet to track him down. Go figure, eh? Have y'all ever met some of those Claymates?

David Sedaris has written a lot about growing up in Raleigh. Some of my favorites of his essays are about life in Raleigh and his somewhat redneck brother and the speech therapist at his Raleigh school who tried to make him lose his sybilant "s".

There are a bazillion writers who settled in Hillsborough. A couple of these are Lee Smith and the recently deceased Doug Marlette.
