what lakes down in the cary/raleigh area have homes around them? We were hoping to find a home that backs up to a lake to rent for the first year. but we would like to be close to town....well, within 15 min of it anyways.

Bunn Lake may suit, although the drive is a little longer. Powerboating allowed for member/residents.

You don't mention powerboating:
You also might consider Lochmere in Cary. Homes surround the lakes.

Homes surround the lake at Edgehill Farm in Cary:

There is a lake in Kildaire Farm in Cary, with homes around it.

Timberlake in Raleigh is a small older neighborhood with 3-4 lakes.

Lake Anne has waterfront homes:

Of course, it is a matter of something suitable to your needs being available when you need it.
