I smolder a little, but on damp days like this, it is reduced....

Restaurants are smoke-free.

It's relative. While I've found fewer people smoke in the Triangle than other Southern and even some Northern cities. I have experienced more smokers here than I experienced in Oregon. BUT restaurants are non smoking. My biggest complaint is when grocery store clerks stand near the doors of grocery stores smoking.

But generally smoking is not allowed on school properties, hospital properties, (including parking lots for both), and Durham even considered restricting smoking near bus stops. So it is something that cities and institutions are proactive about here.

I read recently that a poll in "SELF" magazine ranked Raleigh women as the happiest in the country.

I can only assume it is because they find themselves surrounded by all the handsome men in the Triangle.

Essentially, indoor smoking is prohibited state-wide in public accommodations such as restaurants, bars, nightclubs, etc. The only exceptions are private clubs (meaning country clubs, membership lodges, etc.), a very limited number of cigar bars (when they meet very specific requirements) and some hotel rooms that are labeled as smoking rooms. So, essentially, you aren't going to casually run into indoor smoking in NC unless you really put forth some effort.
FWIW, outdoor smoking is also banned in areas with three walls of any kind and a roof overhead.

You wouldn't know it by looking at the people in my office . On the other hand, my wife and I are healthy, very in shape and workout 4-5 times a week. We have friends that are very healthy and some that are not very healthy. I think overall Raleigh is pretty good, but with the mostly NC natives I work with, eating healthy, working out and staying in shape is NOT a priority of theirs.
