I cannot believe that no one has mentioned Ole Time BBQ on Hillsborough! I've probably eaten close to a whole pig there over the years, definitely some of Raleigh's best BBQ!
Maybe I'm not picky enough, but enjoy most of the places mentioned and don't really have a favorite...Ole Time, Allen and Sons, The Pit all rank pretty highly for me for different reasons.
Where is this Al's in Rolesville? It must be off main somewhere, Rolesville isn't but like 3,4 stoplights.
Technically not Rolesville. Corner of 401 and Forestville in the same shopping center as Lowes Foods (but closer to the Forestville end of the parking lot)
Bright yellow sign outside, pretty hard to miss it.
I am a big fan of Stephenson's in Willow Spring. If I want to stay closer to home (and want a bit more ambiance), I like The Pit (yeah, I know... The Pit).
We should probably stick to less controversial topics, like religion, abortion, or gun control.
That said, I like Allen & Son's (the one north of Chapel Hill) and the Pit. While the Pit is more or too chi-chi for some as far as que joints go (would you like to pair a nice Spanish rose with your sandwich?), I think they are among the more consistently good places for the chopped pork que.
haven't been to the" North" Allen & sons but the South one just outside Pittsboro is pretty good

Me too. They are one of the few places in the area that cook over wood.

Tried Big Al's last weekend for the first time....highly recommend! The pulled pork was really the best I've had so far living down here. Didn't try any of the other sauces though.
I had read in the N&O (or was it TBJ?) that Al took a gamble getting this store...including dumping a sizeable portion of his life savings into it. I gotta respect that entrepreneurial spirit. He took a risk, and hopefully it'll pay off for him. I'd say the odds are stacked against considering that plaza has already seen a few restaurants come and go (Ragazzis and about 2 or 3 coffee shops) and is really empty. It's a tough area. But perhaps Big Al's notoriety around the area can drive business up for that plaza.
