Does ANYONE know what this means? "If you are selected for a seat at one of the schools you ranked ...
So, I go to participate in the choice program at WCPSS. I already tried for magnet (wait list) and leadership (no word yet) and a charter school (no word yet, not part of WCPSS). So I go to do the choice thing, and am given 3 middle school choices. I am forced to rank them 1, 2, 3. Then it says:
"If you are selected for a seat at one of the schools you ranked, you will not be able to decline the seat."
So, I will undoubtedly get into #2 or #3 b/c there are over 100 spots at each. But I will not be sending her to either one (she's home schooled now, she can homeschool again). So am I basically being forced out of my 1st choice? No wait list for me? (There are fewer than 5 spots and 8 have applied).
Also, what does "not being able to decline" mean for my magnet/leadership apps/waitlist position?

**I should add that they have conveniently deleted their direct phone number from the student assignment web page.

I believe some of the other members addressed that in this thread.

You will stay on the waitlist for the magnet even after you get a seat at a school in the proximity round. I am not sure what happens if you get into the Leadership academy. Since you aren't in the system already, they will give you a seat at whichever of your proximity choices has seats.
The 'can't decline a seat' thing is really more for people who are already in the system. It used to be that if you applied for a magnet seat and then decided you didn't want it, you just went to your base. But now if you got a magnet seat in the magnet lottery and then apply for a proximate school and get in, you lose your mag seat and are now assigned to the proximate school.

Could you please point to where they state this about staying on the waitlist for the magnet school? This is my biggest question right now and I can't find an answer in print on their website anywhere.
As for the Leadership Academy, I specifically asked the principal of the Girls Academy and she told me that THIS YEAR ONLY, you will be able to decide whether or not to attend the Leadership Academy over a magnet or choice seat if you get in. So, if you get a magnet seat and are also lucky enough to get into the Leadership Academy, you will be asked which seat you want. But she reiterated that this is ONLY for this year.

lamirshra--i found it here: Time to choose a school in Wake - Wake County - NewsObserver.com This isn't from WCPSS itself, though. I'll poke around the assignment site to see if I can find anything.
Very interesting about the Leadership Academy. They ought to at least do the Leadership at the same time they do magnets. You could really want a certain magnet 1st, then Leadership 2nd, and then another magnet as 3rd.

I forgot to say that if you get your #2 choice you should still get on the waitlist for your #1.

The reason the question came up is because at the time, she kept saying that you weren't allowed to apply to both the Leadership Academy AND magnet schools and that if you applied to the Leadership Academy, it wold kick your magnet application out of the system. So I decided to not apply to the Leadership Academy in favor beating the odds in a magnet school lottery.
But, it made no sense because the magnet period was over before the Leadership Academy applications even needed to be submitted so I then sent her a personal email and asked her if that was really the case. I guess everyone had the same question because she responded to me personally in an email and also to everyone on her email list.
Here is the email I recieved:
We have received several emails about the implications of the Magnet selection window and the Leadership Academies (WLA).
The WCPSS Office of Growth and Planning has confirmed that for the 2012-2013 year ONLY, families may select a Magnet option AND submit an application to the Wake Leadership Academies.
If a family submits an application for a magnet school (Ligon, for example) and a leadership academy/early college (Wake Young Women's/Men's LA), each application will be processed separately.
Scenario 1: If the student is assigned to Ligon during the magnet selection process, that will become the student's assigned school and he/she will no longer have the assignment to the pre-assigned school (school in initial notification slip in November). If he/she is later selected for WLA, he/she will be contacted and offered a choice of keeping the seat at Ligon or taking the seat at WLA. If he/she elects to keep the seat at Ligon, he/she will be removed from the wait list for WLA. If he/she elects to take the seat at WLA that will be the student's assignment, and he/she will no longer be assigned to Ligon and will not be on the wait list for Ligon.
Scenario 2: If the student is not assigned to Ligon during the magnet selection process, h/she will remain assigned to the pre-assigned school (November) and be placed on the wait list for Ligon. If he/she is later selected for WLA, he/she will be contacted and offered a choice of keeping the pre-assigned seat (November) or taking the seat at WLA. If he/she elects to keep the seat at pre-assigned school (November), he/she will be removed from the wait list for WLA. If he/she elects to take the seat at WLA that will be the student's assignment, and he/she will no longer be assigned to (November). However, he/she will remain on the wait list for Ligon.
Scenario 3: If the student is not assigned to Ligon during the magnet selection process AND he/she is not selected for a seat at WLA, he/she will remain on the wait list for both schools and remain assigned to the pre-assigned school, (November).
These same scenarios apply for families applying at the high school level for BOTH magnet high schools and one of the leadership academies/early colleges for this year ONLY. We will align the timelines for the application schools for the 2013-14 school year to avoid the duplicate waiting lists and the need to make seat offers for the leadership academies/early colleges.
We hope this is helpful as you make plans for the 2012-2013 school year.
Remember: information session for rising 6th, 7th, and 9th grade families on Jan. 5 at Crossroads II at 6:30. Applications are due NO LATER THAN JANUARY 13, 2012. We are already beginning to receive completed applications in our office.

Anne - I was told at one of the informational sessions not to rank a school if I wasn't willing to accept it if I got in. The way it was explained to us was that you don't have to rank all of your choices -- just the ones that you're willing to accept. So I'm not sure what they would do if you just ranked your first choice...
In other news, I just signed on and my two elementary school children (who have the same address and live in the same house) have different choices. Their pre-assignment is obviously the school they're at now. Then they have 3 choices that are the same, but their other choice is different. My rising 5th grader has Cedar Fork as a choice, while my rising 2nd grader has Weatherstone as a choice. Neither would be in my first three choices, but I find it a little unsettling.
