Hey all, please be aware of the recent outbreak of norovirus in the area. It causes nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, cramping, etc. People can become severely dehydrated with this and some populations are at increased risk for hospitalization ie: pregnant women, the young, the elderly, the immunocompromised, etc. Hand sanitizers are NOT effective against this. You must wash your hands with soap and water. This virus can live on surfaces for a long period of time. The best cleaner to kill it at home is diluted bleach solution or bleach-based store bought cleaner. Take care and stay healthy.

What, hand sanitizers are not effective?

So if I wipe everything off with those Clorox wipes, are we good to go?

I wonder what I had a few weeks ago. I woke up at 2am throwing up and I even blacked out. Thankfully my wife was there to hold me up. The next morning I got sick again and then later in the day had a fever of 102. It didn't last but 2-3 days. My daughter was sick before me and she too was hit around 2am. Pretty odd that we both woke up around 2am throwing up just 2 days apart from each other.

Sorry for the tmi...... LOL!

**EDIT**

I just found this article. This sounds like what I had! Lovely....

Good warning ReaderGirl! The viruses that cause GI troubles are used to being in hostile environments. They have a thick protein coat. Hand sanitizers basically just move the germs around on your hands. You have to wash your hands and scrub them. Make sure you clean your sink with bleach--and let it sit for a minute before you wipe it away. I hope the teachers stay on the kids to wash their hands. There were 2 little girls leaving school with GI problems yesterday when I had lunch with my son. Norovirus makes you feel miserable.

Here is some info on hand sanitizers that MIGHT kill the virus. I doubt you'll be able to pick it up at CVS though.

There is not such thing as the "stomach flu". Influenza is a respiratory illness that generally does not have GI symptoms.

I always hear people refer to the norovirus as a stomach flu. My doctor even used the term. It may be incorrect, but a lot people have never heard of the norovirus.

Some people also have called it the "cruise-ship" virus because it was first identified on one. I have had it, and it was tracked to a restaurant food-handler.

It gives you projectile vomiting and fast-acting diarrhea, which is quite different from seasonal flu.

Has anyone identified how the norovirus in NC is spreading?

Yes, unfortunately, I'm familiar with the virus.
