My BF and I have seen this guy flying between a small group of trees in my backyard. I swear I hear what sounds like an Owl hooting at night, but obviously the beak looks like this is some type of Hawk...

It looks like either a red shouldered hawk or a northern harrier. It's hard to tell without seeing the back and wings. Either one helps keep snakes and mice away!

I agree that it is probably a red shouldered hawk, very common in this area.

I suspect that the owl sound you are hearing at night is actually an owl, and not these guys. We've also got lots of barred owls around, and they can raise quite a racket.

I've been seeing these lately too, in the southpoint area or Durham.

I sent the pics to a co-worker who's partner works at a nature habitat of some sort in N. Virginia and that is what she said too. Never knew there were so many different types of hawks!

Yep, I'm on the edge of Durham, near Brier Creek.

Default Red Tailed Hawk

Looks like a red tailed hawk. The're pretty common. If he is hanging around regularly maybe he's after your rabbits or squirrels. We had 4 regular visiting rabbits and when the hawks found them they wiped them out. I witnessed one attack in ourback yard otherwise I never would have believed a hawk was getting them. One by one they all disappeared.

Looks like the guy who smashed into my very shiny office window last week and scared me out of 3 years growth. Never knew a bird could fly so 'sheepishly' but he did dust himself off and move on.
