North Hills but expensive.

We live near Triangle Town Center - lots of stores and an outdoor area behind the mall - Poyner Place retail strip even has a created lake where you can dine watching the ducks swim around.

Clayton.
My partner & I are raising our nine year old there and we love it. The schools are excellent and its alot cheaper than Raleigh. Smithfield (about 20 minutes away) has a great outlet center. Raleigh is only 20 minutes as well.

LondonMan, you're spoiled for choice here in the Triangle.

I live in southern Durham & it meets all of your requirements. My neighborhood is very safe and quiet and has tons of gorgeous walking trails. In addition, we have one of the best shopping areas in the Triangle - Southpoint - within 2 miles of our front door. There are also plenty of locally-owned and chain restaurants in the area, 3 grocery stores and 4 drug stores within 2 miles, and oodles of other amenities. The only thing I ever have to go out of my way for is the post office ... and it's just about 5 miles away. In short, southern Durham is a very convenient and beautiful place to live. We really enjoy it.

I love North Durham for the huge amount of parks, Museum of Life and Science, close proximity to Hospitals, etc. And, while you don't have a Nordstrom, there are tons of grocery stores, drug stores, etc., and you don't have all the traffic and noise. Oh yeah, and Costco is also right there.

I live in Kitts Creek in Morrisville. It seems everyone has child on our street. I have never seen so many children at our labor day pool party! They are putting in a Super Walmart, Target, and Sams Club right across the street and since we are close to the highways, Brier Creek and Southpointe are only 10-15 minutes away. We are very happy with our choice. Good luck with your search for the perfect place for your family!

Nordstrom is OK if you got the shekels to buy in there.

Not for everyone's budget. Saks Fifth Ave is in Triangle Town Center. Would have been very out of place 10 years ago.
