Yes, we heard it - twice. Did you hear the second one? Both were much louder than the (hunting) gunshots I've heard in the area. Almost like a canon or explosion or something. Still have no clue what the heck it was.
Yes, I did hear the second one too, but that seemed less dramatic to me but I was downstairs at the time. All very strange though.
Scenic Drive.......funny that you named yourself after your street name. Better than calling yourself Peed Road.
I know that there are exercises at Seymour Johnson this week and Friday I heard a military aircraft flying around. Could it be a pilot hot dogging and dropping a sonic boom?
Most cloud-to-ground lightning comes from the base of a storm cloud and strikes the ground near the thunderstorm, but there is a moderately rare phenomenon called a "Bolt from the Blue" where a cloud-to-ground lightning bolt comes from the TOP of a cloud, travels up to 10, 20, or more miles, and strikes the ground there. These are usually on the leading edge of a thunderstorm, and are also some of the most powerful lightning bolts (and would thus yield some of the loudest thunder). They also have the opposite polarity of normal cloud-to-ground lighting.
Maybe this can explain it?
