Mini earthquakes don't really "boom" (at least none of the ones I've ever been in.)
When we lived in Oak Park, we used get a loud "boom" with the sensation of an earthquake when they blasted at the quarry mine on Duraleigh road.
Many years ago, I lived between Wilmington and Shallotte. And apparently that area feels a lot of tremors or mini-quakes. We felt them a lot, but never heard anything. When the east coast had that decent sized quake last year, the only thing I heard sounded like a plane flying over, no boom.
I asked a friend about this - he manages power grids...he basically said that loud booms aren't coming from the line or an overload (it's possible, but prevented by the power company). If there is a high voltage substation nearby, it could be from the circuit breakers there. Apparently old operational circuit breakers can be loud, though it sounds as if these are one-offs and inconsistent. Not sure if this helps!
I was outside when I heard the first one, at around 8pm. The noise did seem to come from the Wake forest direction, rather than the second which was much nearer and shook my house again (at junction of 98 and Creedmoor).
The almost exact timing of the second one (at 9.55pm) to booms over previous weeks suggests against earthquakes or blown transformers I guess.
Bizarre.

At first I was frightened that a plane might have gone down but the second boom cleared that thought. Also seems unlikely that someone made "two" large bombs for the fun of it. I doubt they would have set a second one off after experiencing the first and knowing the police would be on the prowl. We may never know what they were but now I can imagine what it must feel like to be in a war torn place and be on edge all of the time.
My uncle suggested what he thinks has been causing these booms.
There is a house at the end of Scenic Drive (facing 98) that apparently gets/brings big logs to his back yard (either via delivery or he's driving them in himself). My uncle speculated that the loud booms are caused when the truck raises the bed to let the logs slide out, and because they all come out at once (as opposed to sand/gravel that falls out bit by bit), the back gate of the delivery truck slams shut quickly - and loudly - creating the echoing booms that can be heard in our area.
On some level it makes sense, but I'm certainly no expert at this kind of thing.
… in fact, I came here to see if anyone else was talking about it.
Late this morning, about 10 I guess? Yes, I was asleep, sometimes I work late into the night.
Shook the house, almost like the earthquake last year. But louder, like one boom/thump.
I'm in central Raleigh…
Don't think I was dreaming, or the cat wouldn't have bothered to look up
