If you went to UNC, and presumably visited Raleigh and Durham while there, you must remember that Raleigh simply is not as 'urban" (your word of choice) as Durham, nor is the African-American presence as influential as in The Bull city. I, too, immediately thought of downtown Durham when I read your post, so I suspect you'll end up there. For a city of its population, Raleigh's downtown is actually quite small, though Glenwood South and Fayetteville St, as well as the City Market area, as certainly "hopping". I would look just east of Fayetteville St (towards City market) for a Raleigh equivalent of what you described. There are some nice small condo buildings off Davie and S Blount St. Can't recall the names at the moment.
