Yes, cycling is an option, but it'll be even more of one in a few years once my little one is in school and I don't have to help cart him to and/or from childcare. I have done a Falls River to RTP bike commute (21 mi. each way) a few times in the past, so the bike commute from Brightleaf would be a dream...almost too short in fact!

Like I said, BL is not off the table yet, I just want to make sure I don't react too quickly and that I consider both good and bad of all viable options. Thanks to all for your feedback.

Default Centex?

There is also a Centex development not far from your work. It is their "lower mid-range" homes, but have good-sized lots & reasonably large homes. I think the prices were lower to mid 200s. I wish I could remember the name of it, but it escapes me right now.

Mike

I live in Brightleaf and find no issue with the U-turn. They are actually in the works of repaving highway 70 and adding a supermarket and turn lane at the entrance of Brightleaf. I work on slater road in rtp and it takes me about 9 minutes to get to work. development is great, house was cheaply priced and well made.

I think as soon as they put in that shopping development with the additional roads you won't have to make a u-turn any longer.

where exactly is this shopping development? is it going to be on HW70 or Sherron rd? it will be really nice to have one close to Brightleaf, the supermarket that I can find is in the Brier Creek shopping center.

Are you set on new? North on Sherron is Grove Park which has homes on a golf course for a very reasonable price.
There is also the new neighorhood.
I live in Grove Park and, while I commute the other way to Duke, straight on across 70 is less of a hassle than trying to get out from 70 to Miami. There is also a timing issue too. Can't fully avoid traffic wherever you go.
You get a much better bang for your buck up in these neighborhoods and I am hopeful there will be work done to ease congestion with all the subdivisions going in.
Good luck. We are very happy in that area though.

What part of RTP are you trying to get to? From the Southpoint area like around Grandale (my new home in about 6 months), parts of RTP (SW?) aren't far at all.

I decided to head over there this morning on my way in and do a test commute, which I expected to be a dream. It was not! It took me almost 20 minutes to go just over 3 miles from the center of Brightleaf to my office near Alexander & Durham Freeway. Most of that time was spent in the incredible congestion around 70/Miami/Sherron. I was both shocked and disappointed, and wonder what plans Durham has to combat this problem before the Northern Duram Parkway is opened to alleviate some of the volume. The worst part about it is that Brightleaf has only a small fraction of the number of residents it will have in 1-2 years, and by then I can imagine this intersection will be a complete nightmare. It reminds me of the Wakefield/Bedford effect on Falls of Neuse Road.
I feel your pain, but it could be worse since I live in Durham and have to travel 1hr 15min to work every morning in Wilson, NC and that is just one way. I just bought a brand new car in July with 5 miles on it when I left the dealership and it already has 6,222 miles logged on it ... bummer
