hat456,
Would you share where your kids are in school, particularly if it is an elementary school? I know about the Chapel Hill schools, but I think the commute would be a bit far for me. I think our best bet is to try to move as close to our desired school(s) as possible. I was thinking ITB near Lacy or Olds elementary, or the Washington elementary magnet program, in case anyone has opinions about these.

I think the worse problem that newcomers will face is being stuck in a year round school (if they dont want one). Or being stuck in multiple calendars with older kids in one school and younger in year round; if not this year, then it will come soon! I have suffered through multiple calendars for two years (TWO ELEMENTARY SCHOOL kids in TWO different schools on two diff calendars!) really! in Wake County. One child could grandfather and younger sibling could not tag along. I think WCPSS has fixed that particular problem resulting from reassignment but I think the current situation is worse. People aren't taking a chance on magnet schools as they once did because there is no guarantee of a base school to go back to if it does not work out. You are at the bottom of the food chain in that case in terms of picking schools. My youngest child will NOT go to a magnet school since I am not sure what will happen if it does not work out. We will take his feeder, thank you!

I have so many friends that are now stuck in very difficult situations with calendars that I think if I were moving here, knowing what I now know, I would not rent an apartment in Wake County. I would go with a known quantity in Durham or Chatham or Chapel Hill.

It depends on if that school is full. One of the good things about this plan is that it SHOULD prevent overcrowding meaning that if that school is capped at 96 students (typical of a traditional elementary school) they aren't going to permit 97 from coming there since there are other schools to chose from. With research (maybe calling), you can find out if that school is full for next year (you might want to start with the data manager at the school.
