Yup, good point
That's true--murderers in outlying counties do seem to know their victims! All the more important, if considering Durham, to rent first and make sure you really know where the dangerous areas are. That's the only way to protect your family from random violence. The Southpoint area, however, does not have a reputation for violent crime--at least not now.

Also I have nothing against Durham as a whole and there really are nice areas in Durham. Durham however does have some of the more consentrated ghetto areas in the whole Triangle

I live one mile north of Southpoint Mall in a neighborhood that is densely wooded and extremely quiet. We lived out on the fringes of Hillsborough before moving here and we were pleasantly surprised when we discovered that it is just as quiet here! And as a bonus, our home is very conveniently located.
It's true that there are some new neighborhoods in the area with fewer trees, but that's true all over the Triangle.

There's no way to protect against random violence; that's what makes it random.

I recently moved to North Raleigh and I really like it. I have visited Durham and there are some great areas like South Point. I could live there and be happy I think. But I did a lot of searching and reading about the areas before I moved. There are a lot of online publications that can help you learn about the areas. I particularly like www.trianglereport.com. I got a lot of good information from there.

Ummm, drive-bys are not random, and what other random crime are you referring to?

Drug dealers and gangs. It's random, because they don't know who they will target day to day. I don't mean totally random, like in "oh I'm having a bad day, I'm just going to shoot someone". I was really talking about gang crime and people getting caught in the crossfire (random).

Yes, but it is still not completely random. I mean, they don't go riding through Hope Valley or Treyburn. And when there is a drive-by they usually have a specific target. Most people in those areas know who the drug dealers are, and where they live. Stay off the streets at night if you live in that area, or try to move.
The best thing would be to report them to the police, but I'm sure most people would be petrified for their life to do something like that.
There are drive-bys and random drug crimes in areas of Wake County, Orange County(right between Chapel Hill and Carrboro), and most surrounding counties. Unfortunately.

Yes, but Durham crime statistics are far worse than Raleigh. You can check out the numbers from the main city-data homepage by following the links. Yes, you can get gunned down anywhere, but your chances of it happening are much greater in Durham than in Raleigh. I get tired of people trying to sugarcoat that and claiming Durham gets a bad rap. Durham gets the rap it deserves based on the statistics.

But it is still wrong to make the entire city of Durham sound like the ghetto. Most of Durham is extremely beautiful and safe. The crime is concentrated to a specific area. Avoid that area and you avoid most of the crime.

Durham is also a fairly large county with only one true city, and the crime in that city is honestly very localized. It's kind of like saying Southern California is a crime infested area. Sure there are many parts of Southern California that have crime, but you also have some of the most beautiful and expensive areas of the country.
Don't lump the whole area as one. It's just like saying every Hispanic person you see is illegal. Aren't we trying to educate people in this country about being prejudiced?
