Been thinking about commuting to work by bike and wondered if anyone had a recommendation for a good place in Raleigh (or the Triangle) to get a suitable bike.

Also, any ideas on the approximate cost?

I looked at them for a while, and a good commuter bike can be $600 and up. Look for a store which will help you find the best fit, and will help you decide what you need. I considered going up to Cary and looking at a place like REI: http://www.rei.com/category/40005059

However, the local folks can give you better advice.

I bought a very serviceable Schwinn hybrid at Performance Bikes for about $390 last year.
They run some pretty good specials on discontinued models, or limited stock models, when they are tryig to clear inventory.
I am satisfied with the transaction and service.

I nought a bike last Friday for riding for fun at Cycling Spoken Here Cycling Spoken Here | Bike Shop Cary/Raleigh/Apex | Trek, Scott, Shimano, Niner, Giro, Yakima, Oakley. They were so helpful that I would not hesitate to purchase future bikes there. They also give free tune-ups for life for the bike. Try searching the forum too because bikes have been discussed before.

I got my bike for free from the Durham Bike Co-Op. It took a few hours, and I eventually put another $100 into it for new tires and some other goods, but it's probably the best investment I've ever made.

Seven Stars Cycles in Downtown Durham (in the Bargain Furniture Building, 309 E Chapel Hill St) has some pretty well-priced bikes from Linus. Adrian in the shop there is very down-to-earth and approachable.

I have used both Bicycle Chain and Performance and recommend both. I bought my bike from Bicycle Chain and was happy with the experience. I have only had service done at Performance but was happy with that as well..
