Does anyone know of places to leave kayaks and bikes near Bedford (before Capital BLVD) in order to kayak from Falls of Neuse Rd to around Bedford. Without having someone run a shuttle I was considering leaving bikes at the take out and when we get there leaving the kayaks long enough to ride our bikes back up the Greenway to get the car from the put in.

Any other suggestions would be helpful to avoid needing a shuttle person.
I want to kayak it with my grandson so we just have one driver.

Would you consider using/paying for a canoe service? There used to be Peddle and Paddle at the Falls dam. They would rent the canoes/kayaks for a day trip. It really wasn't much. We would pack our lunch and stop halfway to eat lunch. They put us in at Falls dam and picked us up on Buffaloe Road. About $45.00 a canoe back than.

Would rather not since we have kayaks. I have figured out how to do it with biking back up the Greenway Trail to the put in..just need to find a good takeout spot.

IMO, it's the worst river I have ever kayaked. If you can make it to the Cape Fear river, you'll enjoy it more.

It is scenic, but there are a LOT of sandbars and debris when the water level is low until you get past Capital Blvd.
kelly237, it's not too late today (10-2) to get out to the Falls Lake Festival at the Falls Lake Dam. Paddle Creek is having a big demo and sale, so you can try out one of their kayaks for free and see a little of the Neuse.

Even in the days before dams, navigating the Neuse upstream from Goldsboro or at most Smithfield was a hit-or-miss proposition. Since the dams were built, however, there are fewer occurrences of high flow that clean out the river channel. Now it takes a really big rain event to force a sustained high release from Falls Lake, and we haven't had one since 1999. (Although Alberto in 2006 did flood Crabtree Valley, it didn't actually result in much of a discharge from Falls Lake.)
