A traveling exhibition that pays tribute to the victims and heroes of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorists attacks will visit Raleigh on the second stop of a national fundraising tour.

The exhibit will be in front of City Hall and in Nash Square on Sept. 15-16.

The 15-city tour is designed to build support for the creation of the National September 11 Memorial and Museum at the World Trade Center. The exhibition tells the 9/11story from the perspective of families, first responders, survivors, volunteers and others.

Mayor Charles Meeker will preside over an opening ceremony in Raleigh, and he will be joined by local first responders and a representative of the national memorial.

Area residents will have the chance to sign a steel beam that will be used in the construction of the memorial. The exhibition, which will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days, also will include a detailed timeline of the events, photographs, artifacts and a short film.

The tour begins on Sept. 10 in Columbia, S.C., home to the company fabricating thousands of tons of steel for the memorial. Two 37-foot-long, 4-ton beams that will be installed at the memorial will travel with foundation leaders, September 11 survivors, and exhibits including a firefighter's helmet, and the watch and building IDs of a man who escaped from the north tower.
