I live in Raleigh and currently have a doctor. I've been looking for a different doctor but haven't been able to find anyone who will take a new MEDICARE patient. Do ANY Internists or GPs in the area, take new Medicare patients?

Aren't there several hospitals/clinics in your vicinity affiliated with Duke or UNC? Those are both very good hospitals.

To find docs that accept Medicare patients, always go to the large medical centers, especially those associated with research and medical schools. They are required to accept Medicare patients. It is a stipulation of the funding they receive from the government.

I didn't realize that. After calling several doctors offices, only to be told that they didn't accept Medicare, I gave up and came to the conclusion that no one wants to deal with Medicare unless they're forced to do it.

Younger doctors with new practices often accept Medicare patients as well.

Yup - don't give up hope!

Sometimes it is less convenient, and you have to drive a ways to get to these big medical centers, but it is worth it. Those are great hospitals, and after having family members suddenly struck with serious illness I am so so grateful that we live in a major metropolitan area with multiple medical school/major hospitals. These are the places that have the most experience with the most problems.

My parents are/were both on Medicare, and never once had a doctor refuse to accept them at these hospitals/clinics.

Call Duke - Ask for internal medicine clinic or primary care clinic. There should be dozens of doctors working there. Just ask which ones are accepting new patients. They will not discriminate against you because you have Medicare.
