I do understand that point (unlike othe posters avoidence about the risk) but dont you and anyone else think this could have been put further out from this highly populated area? That really is my point.

I would hope the population factor was taken into account. The problem is that you need highly qualified people to work it, and putting them out in remote areas would limit that pool. I think it's going to be a tough sell for the local community no matter where it ends up.

Default Stop the National Bio Agro Defense Facility

All who live here please take note of the plans which we need to put a stop to, for the National Bio Facility in Butner, near Creedmoor. And Falls Lake isn't too far away, either. Here is an article.

What is the Proposed “NBAF?”

The Department of Homeland Security (“DHS”) plans to build a new facility to research animal and animal-to-human (or “zoonotic”) diseases, for some of which there are no treatments or vaccines. The mission of the “National Bio- and Agro- Defense Research Facility,” or NBAF, is vague and changing, even based on DHS’s own website. The current facility, Plum Island, is on an island off the coast of mainland New York. Congress enacted a law decades ago banning study of diseases such as foot and mouth disease on the mainland U.S. However, some U. S. legislators are now trying to reverse this long-standing law.

Now DHS—understaffed agency whose FEMA division so disastrously bungled the response to Katrina—is proposing to build a lab the size of 5 Wal-Marts, just down the road from significant animal and human populations, including long-term hospital patients. The Umstead Research Farm, at the border of Granville and Durham Counties, is one of five locations on the final national list for the facility. Many of the diseases to be studied can be transmitted by mosquitoes and ticks, and by lab workers who may not know they have carried a disease home with them. As the former research director of Plum Island said, any state with a sizable livestock industry would be the worst place to site the lab due to the risks to animals there.

Default Seriously, sounds like the good making of

a terrible movie. Any one ever seen Residence Evil? They tested wierd products and some substance was broken and it spread into the workers.

We keep fooling around with this stuff, we may get burned.

perfect setup for an episode of 24. Next week, the one show you can't afford to miss.......
Personally, I wouldn't want this lab built anywhere, but I guess somebody needs to be researching this stuff.
Man, its a good thing all those people from the other thread moved to N. wake county/Durham to get away from Shearon Harris. Oh wait, that's where the incurable, super toxic, disease lab is going. Crap, you just can't go anywhere these days.

Everyone that I have asked about this facility says, "no". Where are they getting the support for this freaky place?

Because Butner's main economy is goverment based until very recently they were owned and governed by the federal goverment....that is why they are getting support...they also have lots goverment infrastructure in place already.

Not saying I personally like the idea of it being there....but I can understand why Butner is a frount runner.

The support stemmed from our Gov, the local universities, the people of NC involved with agriculture, and so on. Yes, they feel with the other federal buildings already in Butner that security will be ok for this facility too.
Now it is taking somewhat of a reverse course with some of the original supporters.

This is what bothers me......A main concern from this facility should it make it into Butner is the "stuff" has to get to and from this facility and will be not only passing houses owned by residents in Granville County, but be passing by many surrounding counties also and beyond. Alot of good points are made in the links, including this one .

Well, I'm a biogenetic scientist. So there. Reading venting realtor comments on City-data forum is much more interesting that sciencey things.

Need to read up about the details of the Butner plans before I have an opinion. Isn't there a prison at Butner? Not that thats got anything to do with it.

Funnily enough, a similar facility studying foot and mouth, bluetongue etc. is in the South of England. This facility recently made headlines as it caused an outbreak of foot and mouth in that area of the country. Originally it was thought that a worker inadvertently took some of the virus off the premises. Turns out I think the virus made its way out via the sewer system.
