I'm driving down (from Connecticut) to the area on Columbus Day Weekend, in particular to get a feel for various communities surrounding Raleigh. Because I have limited time I was wondering if anyone could give me some suggestions on a possible course to take so that I can get a sense of the following towns and maybe some interesting points of interest along the way. Besides Raleigh, the towns are: Wake Forest, Apex, Cary, Holly Springs, Brentwood and Clayton. Any suggestions for my 48 excursion?
Thanks

I'd recommend weaving your way from north to south. Start in WF, then head down through north Raleigh (through Brentwood, which is not a town but rather an older section of Raleigh just north of the I-440 & US1 area) and from there into the older parts of Raleigh located ITB (Inside The Beltline, or located within the I-440 loop). From there, head southeast to Clayton. From Clayton, I'd recommend seeing Garner (located just west of Clayton), then keep heading southwest to Holly Springs. From HS, head north through Apex and Cary.

While that encompasses all the towns on your list plus one, I'd also recommend looking around Morrisville (just north of Cary), and then if time permits, head west and north through Durham starting near Southpoint Mall at I-40 & Fayetteville Road and finishing up north of I-85 in beautiful northern Durham. This will put you at a convenient location to jump on I-85 North for your drive back to CT.

One thing to keep in mind while driving through the area is that most of the main roads you'll see on the map are mostly commercial. To get a real feel for the area, you'll need to turn off those roads as much as possible to weave through the different neighborhoods.

Good luck with your trip, and safe travels!
