Hey Friends
I'm having dinner out this Saturday night with bunch of new friends and wandering if there are any places/bars downtown where you can sit down and listen to live music . . perferably around 10pm?
Thanks!

Don't have an answer for you, but noticed you're from IL? Or at least went to SIU? Where are you from? We moved here from Bloomington IL, but went to HS about an hour south of Chicago.

What kind of music. I assume from the "sit-down" reference that you are not refering to a rock and roll beer drinking type place. In downtown Raleigh, your main options for live music that do not involve standing up, as well as waiting til midnight for the music to start are Amra's and Yancey's.

Yancey's is a large place with decent food and a great atmosphere. It has great music, especially on weekends....more R&B or "smooth jazz" on weekends than true jazz.
Yancy's - Good Music, Great Food, and Large Times - Fayetteville Street, Raleigh, NC (broken link)
It is on Fayetteville Street in the heart of downtown.

Amra's is in Glenwood South. Depending on the band, it could have jazz or more covers.

For true Jazz, there is always great jazz at the bar at Sullivan's steak house in Glenwood South.

You could also check out Tir Na Nog, which has everything from bluegrass to irish. More of a pub atmosphere.

I am sure there are more that I am not thinking of.

Default Downtown Raleigh Live Music

There are actually several "sit down" spots in downtown Raleigh to catch some live music. There are of course the larger music venues that host larger touring bands (those are widely advertised and are therefore easy to find), but the local music hot spots are not as prominently advertised. In fact, the best spots are best discovered by word of mouth. Check out this local music group Live Music-Raleigh, Durham, Cary, Chapel Hill-Triangle! (Raleigh, NC) - Meetup.com for Raleigh live music. There you can easily find the where and when for quality "sit down music" you are looking for, and you can find fellow live music fans in the Triangle.
