Looks like the DOT is finally admitting its mistake and will re-do the Hillsborough Street roundabout near NC State to reduce it from two lanes to one.

I've only been through it a couple of times, and never when traffic was busy, and never had a problem with it. But I have to admit whenever I see the diagrams in the paper I am baffled as to how it's supposed to work, and end up spending a minute or two visually driving through the different lanes in the diagrams to figure out how each approach and turn would work. I can't imagine having to figure it out on the fly during a busy time. Thankfully it seems I'll never have to.

I say keep it two lanes and let Darwinism do it's job. The more people avoid it in favor of Western Blvd, the most pedestrian friendly Hillsborough will become

I, too, am going to miss the two-lane roundabout. I find it fun and exciting. Going through it feels almost like performance art.

Haha! Great description! But I can live without the excitement. I have had too many close calls with clueless drivers.

Sadly the worst offenders I've seen won't be saved by the change. Like the girl I saw who stopped her car in the middle of the circle and started backing her car up to exit onto Pullen. Something tells me she'd pull that idiotic stunt regardless of if it's one lane or two.

The article mentions the main problem causing wrecks is eastbound drivers failing to yield to both lanes of the roundabout, but the main problem I have encountered is westbound drivers going straight from the left lane (left lane is supposed to be left turn only.)

I can't figure out the purpose of 2 lanes either....it's not even that big of a roundabout. Some of these responses made me laugh though!

Few people are aware of this, but the entire Hillsborough Street re-do is actually a sophomore-year project for kids in the NCSU school of design.

I thought a roundabout only had right turns.

What bothers me is that people will do ridiculous and dangerous things instead of just circling around again to get in the right lane. I would imagine that's why they are having to take it to one lane. I've definitely been in the wrong lane before, but am smart enough to know that I just need to go around again and safely get in the right lane rather than back up, swerve over, etc. My 90% out of town guests at my wedding had to use the roundabout and I gave explicit instructions about which lane to be in. I could see it being a bit confusing for someone who's never driven in a two lane roundabout before... it's not like you have time to absorb the signs before you're actually in it.
